While the JJ Pionke Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Savil and Aiden Care Fund are the estate’s preferred places to give in JJ’s memory, if you’d like to contribute to an organization in JJ’s name, here are some places that JJ would support.
Planned Parenthood
JJ was a card-carrying Planned Parenthood supporter, and gave annual gifts to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
Transgender Law Center
JJ experienced discrimination and harrassment because of his trans identity and believed passionately that trans rights are human rights. Support of the Transgender Law Center can help others experiencing discrimination because of their gender identity.
Disability Justice Project
JJ was passionate about oral history and storytelling, and believed that giving people the power to tell their own stories could be transformative for individuals and society at large. The Disability Justice Project of the Center for Independent Documentary helps disabled human rights defenders develop, produce, and disseminate accessible documentary films for disability justice advocacy.
Sins Invalid
The work of Sins Invalid, a disability justice based performance project that incubates and celebrates artists with disabilities, centralizing artists of color and queer and gender-variant artists, inspired the research JJ had undertaken before his death.
Nota Bene
You may notice that there are no libraries, library organizations, or LIS programs listed here. JJ’s relationship to the profession was complicated, and there was more to him than being a librarian. So please, if you feel the need to donate in his name and don’t want to support the funds he endorsed before his death, please choose one of these. If you’re still not sure, please contact executor@jj-pionke-memorial.org with questions.
